Upcoming Event: Building Quality Frameworks for Tomorrows' E-Learning

09/04 ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN 2004:
What makes e-learning successful? The question strikes at the heart of what will be presented in the session.

Quality development and assurance in e-learning is a field of growing diversity and difficult to pin down. For e-learning, however, it has become more and more clear that quality is a crucial factor in determining the success or failure of technology enhanced education. This is true for all educational sectors, even on a national and on a European level.

There is a great uncertainty amongst learners and educational practitioners which quality strategies, instruments and quality certificates would best serve their needs. In this context many questions arise, such as: What is the evaluation model to use for assessing the impact of e-learning? Which strategies are best applied to ensure high quality e-learning and which certificates cover which individual preferences? Can a meta-model for quality in e-learning be applied which allows for the structuring, analysis and comparison of quality approaches, instruments and strategies so the practitioner can choose one that fits his or her needs?

This session will bring together experienced international researchers in the field of quality development assurance . They will present their findings and discuss how different approaches and models might be integrated. These presentations will systematically look into various quality concepts and will also address questions related to the choice of an appropriate quality model.

The session will include presentations by Markus Wirth from the Institute for Business Education and Educational Management at the University of St. Gallen who will talk about the new EFMD certification of e-learning (CEL) and Prof. Ganas Kistan from the University of Kwazulu-Natal in South Africa who leads the office of quality assurance in his recently merged university.

The session will also include presentations by Giovanni Fulantelli from the Italian National Research Council who proposes a systemic approach to e-learning based on the work carried out by his council funded by the Italian Ministry of Labour, Anne-Marie Husson from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Paris who will talk about the French 'Code of Best Practice for E-Learning' launched by the chamber and Sinje Teschler and Barbara Hildebrand who will introduce the EQO Model, which provides a conceptual framework addressing quality in European e-learning.

The chairperson, Dr. Ulf-Daniel Ehlers is an expert in e-learning related quality research. He is currently the coordinator of the "European Quality Observatory" for the Department for Information Systems for Production and Operations Management at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany.
